If you’ve ever wondered how to incorporate veggie-growing techniques into your backyard or community garden, or what vegetables are in season this month (and want a little inspiration for how to cook them), this class is a fun way to find out. You’ll learn about producing your own food from seedling to plate, and taste the flavors of each season. This class is ideal for the home cook, gardener (or aspiring gardener), or even someone whose New Year’s resolution is to eat more vegetables than last year.

Each session is 1.5 hours long and focuses on a particular topic related to gardening.

  • Visiting the teaching gardens and discovering the plants grown in each area
  • Tasting plant-based dishes entirely based around the seasonal produce
  • A hands-on gardening activity related to plant or animal care on the farm
  • Preparing a dish for you to take home to cook or bake along with recipes

What could be better? Learn a little, get your hands dirty, take a walk outdoors, and eat the freshest produce available!

Ruby Bleskacek, the Farm Crew Team Lead at Queens Farm, graduated from Barnard College with a degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability. Before joining the QCFM team, she worked with goats and sheep at a dairy farm in California, practicing regenerative land management methods and fostering her love for connecting people to the land they live on. She also has experience working with Indigenous groups in the American West documenting and researching historic growing methods in drought prone areas. Ruby continues to enjoy connecting communities to their food and the people who grow it!

Tess Fleming is the Queens County Farm Museum's in-house Botanist and plant-science educator who cares for the six educational gardens at Queens Farm. Growing up in Brooklyn as a nature-loving kid, she knows firsthand how important outdoor education and green spaces can be in New York City, thankful to have been able to spend four years learning as a teen apprentice at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and several years after that as an active member of her local community garden. She graduated with Bachelor's of Science in Biology with honors from the City University of New York and has worked in science education and research for the past few years. Obsessed with learning as much as possible about botany, insects, and the natural world, she has gained a good deal of experience identifying wild plants and cultivating tame ones and is always learning more.

Jupiter Girard is the Livestock Manager at the Queens County Farm Museum, where she oversees animal care. She holds a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from Miami University, with graduate research centered on improving care for exotic pets. With over seven years of experience working in animal husbandry, including previous work with sharks at the New York Aquarium, Jupiter is dedicated to caring for the animals, as well as expanding education surrounding livestock and heritage breeds at the farm.
