Learn how to plant seedlings, directly sow, weed, prune, companion plant, harvest vegetables, dry herbs, and more with Queens County Farm Museum’s in-house Botanist and biology expert, Tess Fleming. Our Compost and STEM Coordinators will also be onsite for several of these fully outdoor, hands-on gardening sessions.  Sessions take place in one or more of our six Teaching Gardens where we plant and harvest tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, a wide variety of lettuces, kale, broccoli, zucchini, summer squash, sunflowers, strawberries, onions, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, green beans, snap peas, cucamelons, radishes, carrots, watermelon, and a large assortment of herbs and spices.

Each session is 1 hour long and focuses on a particular topic related to gardening:

  • Visiting the teaching gardens and discovering the plants grown in each area
  • Tasting plant-based dishes based around seasonal produce
  • A hands-on gardening activity related to plant or animal care on the farm
  • Preparing a dish for you to take home to cook or bake along with recipes

What could be better? Learn new skills, get your hands dirty, take a walk outdoors, and eat the freshest produce available!

Tess Fleming is the Queens County Farm Museum's in-house Botanist and plant-science educator who cares for the six educational gardens at Queens Farm. Growing up in Brooklyn as a nature-loving kid, she knows firsthand how important outdoor education and green spaces can be in New York City, thankful to have been able to spend four years learning as a teen apprentice at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and several years after that as an active member of her local community garden. She graduated with Bachelor's of Science in Biology with honors from the City University of New York and has worked in science education and research for the past few years. Obsessed with learning as much as possible about botany, insects, and the natural world, she has gained a good deal of experience identifying wild plants and cultivating tame ones and is always learning more.
